The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) was formed in 2006 by the United Nations General Assembly, in place of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights—a UN body that had experienced widespread backlash for its member states’ poor adherence to international human rights standards. Today, the UNHRC is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, with the purpose of upholding fundamental human rights across the global stage. The United Nations General Assembly is responsible for electing the council’s member states.
The UNHRC examines alleged human rights violations in UN member states, in accordance with a variety of international human rights conventions. By employing special rapporteurs and working groups, the UNHRC is able to create detailed reports available to the general public and begin inquiries into human rights abuses in individual countries.
The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) is an intermediate committee that offers an experience for all delegates with interest.

As a senior in Crofton House School, Bridget Young is more than ecstatic to serve as the Director for UNHRC for CAIMUN 2020. Ever since grade 9 where she mistakenly fell into the sphere of discord and discussion, Bridget has grown to find an unexpected yet fervent passion in Model UN. Not only has she learned about the practice of public speaking, Bridget has also made some of her closest friends through the process. Outside of Model UN, Bridget can be found cramming biology at the last minute or playing sudoku puzzles. Bridget is thrilled to see the riveting debate that comes from CAIMUN 2020!
Jimmy is a senior at Port Moody Secondary School and is beyond honoured to be serving as Chair of the United Nations Human Rights Council at his final iteration of CAIMUN. Since his first Model UN experience nearly 3 years prior, Jimmy has found a second home in the weekends of intense debate and enchanting competition. When parted from the realm of Model UN, Jimmy can be found taking unintentional naps, struggling with basic calculus, or searching for his next caffeine fix. As the curtains to his high-school Model UN career are drawn to a close, CAIMUN is the last remaining sliver of light that warms this senior's heart. Jimmy is beyond excited for the weekend of riveting debate that is to come!
As a grade 11 student at Meadowridge School, Joey is grateful to be able to serve as a Chair for the United Nations Humans Rights Council. He first joined Model United Nations out of sheer curiosity but has become more involved in the scene. Model United Nations also piqued his interest in politics, causing him to become politically active in the community around him. When not doing academic work, Joey is either stuck in his room reading unusual Wikipedia articles or spending his time with online friends on a Pokémon simulator. Joey wishes delegates the best of luck and looks forward to sharing an unforgettable experience in CAIMUN 2020.
