DESCRIPTION

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is an intergovernmental military alliance that includes 30 member states from across Europe and North America. The organization was established following the signing of the North Atlantic Treaty on April 4th, 1949 in an attempt to put an end to the expansion of the Soviet Union into Europe. At its core, NATO has always strived to safeguard the democratic freedom and security of its member states through both political and military means.

Presently, NATO has expanded its mandate, implementing international humanitarian aid, and playing an active role in the political reconstruction of conflict-ridden nations. Additionally, NATO has a key role in the security of Afghanistan and has ongoing missions in the Balkans and the Mediterranean; it also offers security support to partners around the globe, including the United Nations, African Union, and European Union.

NATO is an intermediate committee that offers an experience for all delegates with interest.

STAFF

Darren Yang
Director

Currently in his Junior year at Lord Byng Secondary School, Darren is beyond ecstatic to be serving as the Director of NATO at CAIMUN 2021. Ever since his first conference 2 years ago, he has been enthralled by the captivating and nuanced diplomacy and debate that Model UN has to offer. Some of Darren’s favourite parts of Model UN are creating new friendships and memories, functioning on 2 hours of sleep, and taking advantage of the venue’s amenities. Outside of the Model UN and debate world, you can find Darren procrastinating by napping, stressing out about the tiniest most insignificant thing, or wasting every last dollar in his wallet on bubble tea. Darren cannot wait to meet all the delegates and hopes that this conference will be an unforgettable experience for everyone! .

Michelle Zhai
Chair

As a senior at York House School, Michelle is beyond ecstatic to be serving as the Chair of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) at CAIMUN 2021. Ever since her first Model UN Conference in grade 9, she has been captivated by the compelling world of international relations and cherishes the avid debate and meaningful friendships that have come out of MUN. From speaking a single-digit amount of times during her first MUN Conference to intensely debating 100+ countries, Michelle has enjoyed every second of her MUN experience, even the sleepless nights. Outside of MUN, you’ll catch Michelle drinking an excessive amount of bubble tea, scrolling endlessly through TikTok, and going on long beach walks while blasting music. Michelle looks forward to a weekend full of memories and fruitful debate and cannot wait to see what each delegate has to contribute!
